How to Host a Cozy Holiday Craft Night with Crafts, Cocktails, and Cats

Craftmas with Cats

Welcome to holiday craft night - with cats!

If you follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, you know that I am in my handmade era. Give me a cocktail, a cat by my side, an acrylic marker, some water colors, and crayons, and I think I've found Nirvana. Add some gal pals to the mix, and I will want to forever hit "paws" on the night.

There’s something delightful about gathering around a table with friends, a festive drink, and a project that may or may not turn out like the inspiration photo. Someone discovers a hidden talent. Someone gets very enthusiastic about ribbon. And the cat appoints herself quality control manager.

Etsy’s Fall/Winter 2026 trend report calls this gathering trend “Craftmas”: friends and family coming together to make ornaments, gifts, and memories. We love the idea of a holiday celebration where making something together is part of the fun. Ready to host your own? Here’s how to create a cozy holiday craft night with easy projects, festive refreshments, and plenty of purr-sonality.

1. Pick One Craft to Build the Evening Around

The best holiday craft night projects are easy to explain, forgiving of beginner skills, and small enough to finish in an evening. Choose one main activity so you can keep the supplies—and your preparation—manageable. A few favorites:

Paint-your-own ornaments. Start with unfinished wooden ornaments, water-based craft paint, and paint pens. Guests can create colorful patterns, pet portraits, initials, or tiny holiday scenes.

Handmade holiday cards. Set out blank cards, stamps, decorative paper, markers, and washi tape. Make a few for loved ones or create a small bundle to give as a gift. My Comfort Diva 2026 Christmas Cards started this exact way. Those cards are a digital reproduction of my original handmade card.

Personalized gift tags. Plain cardstock tags become charming finishing touches with doodles, lettering, and ribbon. This is a particularly good option for a mixed group of enthusiastic crafters and “I’m just here for the snacks” friends.

Mini festive paintings. Small canvases make room for big personalities. Give everyone the same prompt—“a cat’s idea of Christmas,” perhaps—and enjoy how differently they interpret it. (You know mine would be snarky.) Make a sample beforehand to check the steps and drying time. Then let your guests take the idea wherever they like.

2. Choose a Theme That Makes You Smile

Your theme can be as simple as a color palette or as wonderfully specific as “Christmas at the Cat Lady Cottage.”

Try one of these:

  • Meowy & Bright: Colorful ornaments, playful cat motifs, and cheerful holiday music.

  • Vintage Christmas Club: Nostalgic colors, handwritten cards, and classic holiday tunes.

  • Cocktails & Crafts: A signature sip, personality-filled cocktail napkins, and festive gift-making.

  • Cozy Cottage Craft Night: Botanical details, warm colors, and mugs of something delicious.

Use what you already own as your starting point. A favorite tablecloth, a few ornaments in a bowl, or colorful glassware can give the evening a sense of occasion.

3. Set a Table That’s Ready for Creativity

Give each guest a clear workspace, a protective paper mat, and the basic supplies for the project. Group shared materials in jars or small trays so everyone can reach them.

A few thoughtful touches help:

  • Put a name card at each place.

  • Keep a finished sample nearby for inspiration.

  • Set up a separate spot for projects to dry.

  • Leave room for elbows, drinks, and ambitious artistic decisions.

For a playful finishing touch, add Comfort Diva’s Signature Cocktail Napkins to the refreshment station. Invite guests to choose the cocktail personality that suits them—or let their friends nominate one.

Who’s the Dirty Martini? Who’s the Mimosa? Consider it your opening conversation starter.

4. Serve Snacks You Can Eat Between Brushstrokes

Choose food that’s easy to pick up and won’t require you to spend the evening in the kitchen.

Think cheese and crackers, grapes, mini sandwiches, and bite-size cookies. Keep the food on a separate surface so paint water and refreshments never become confusingly close neighbors.

For drinks, offer one festive cocktail, a nonalcoholic option, and water. Cranberry and rosemary make an easy seasonal combination with sparkling water or your preferred cocktail ingredients. A whimsical apron is a fun hosting touch while you prepare the snacks—and handy if you join the painting. My favorite Comfort Diva apron for this is the floral cat apron, because it has deep pockets that can hold scissors and pens.

5. Give the Evening a Gentle Rhythm

A little structure helps everyone settle in without making the gathering feel scheduled to the minute.

For a roughly two-hour party, try:

  • First 20 minutes: Arrive, snack, and choose drinks.

  • Next 10 minutes: Introduce the project and show the supplies.

  • Next hour: Create, chat, and enjoy the playlist.

  • Final 30 minutes: Admire the results, take photos, and package finished pieces.

Have a few extra gift tags available for anyone who finishes early. Guests who prefer to take their time can keep working while everyone chats.

6. Keep Your Feline Supervisor in Mind

If your cats will be nearby, choose your setup with their curiosity in mind. Keep ribbon, string, ornament hooks, and small embellishments out of reach. Use battery-operated candles for atmosphere, tidy supplies as you go, and give your cat a comfortable place to retreat if the gathering gets lively.

A cat watching from a cozy chair is excellent company. A cat carrying off the ribbon requires an intermission. (This has happened to me more than once. Learn from my pain.)

7. Send Everyone Home With Something Personal

Once projects are ready to travel, help guests wrap them in tissue or tuck them into a small gift bag. Check drying instructions before stacking or packaging painted pieces. Encourage everyone to sign and date their creations. A slightly lopsided ornament can become a favorite reminder of a very good evening.

And if someone’s masterpiece looks nothing like the sample? That’s a story worth keeping, too.

Make a Little Holiday Joy Together

Holiday craft night gives you a reason to slow down, spend time with people you love, and make something with your own hands. Put on the music. Pour something festive. Set out the supplies.

Whether you leave with a beautiful handmade gift or an ornament with a highly questionable cat face, you’ve made a memory.
